From Humble Beginnings…
In 1959, Philip Winterton was having difficulty obtaining bedding for the agricultural industry, so in his search for alternative suppliers, he eventually located one in the North West. However, after a while, demand increased and Philip decided that this would be an excellent opportunity to pursue his own business venture. He attended a bankruptcy sale and bought an old Bedford QL for a mere £28, and so the business began.

About the same time, Philip also secured contracts to supply wood flour and chipboard to manufacturers, so he bought an articulated vehicle to cope with the increased demand and expansion. Since then, the business continued to bloom as the fleet of vehicles multiplied and order sizes increased.
In 1989, Philip’s elder son Gary joined the board, and so began the family business, P.H Winterton and Son. By 1997, we opened our first dedicated premises at Longsdon, Staffordshire, where we started to invest in packaging materials, previously we only supplied in bulk. In 2008 the company moved to a larger site at Moorside, Cauldon Lowe, and installed 1 automated packaging line, in 2012 a second packaging line was added.
Where are we now?
Today, the business consists of many members of the family who all play a vital role in the day-to-day running of P.H. Winterton & Son: Philip, Philip’s wife Mae, sons Gary and Daniel, and Gary’s children Jason, Nikki and Adam are all part of the team. We are also a leading supplier of animal bedding, cubicle bedding, equine bedding, poultry bedding, sawdust, shavings and even biomass fuel or sawmill waste collection in areas such as Staffordshire, Derbyshire, Cheshire and Nottinghamshire – due to our large fleet of vehicles, we are able to deliver orders of any size!
P.H Winterton and Son are also on the Government’s Biomass Supplier List, which was introduced by the Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy (BEIS), formerly the Department of Energy and Climate Change (DECC), in April 2014. This initiative supports the Government’s Renewable Heat Incentive (RHI) scheme by ensuring that RHI payments are only issued to biomass boilers using woodfuel that meets certain sustainability and legality requirements.
Don’t take our word for it though, here’s a handful of testimonials from our customers –
Carlo Rosa – Great service!
John Quilter – Good extraction system
Kamil Rzeszotek – Good friendly staff
