Biomass is one of the most renewable energy sources which refers to biological material derived from living organisms such as wood and waste. P.H Winterton and Son have been producing biomass fuel using wood pellets that we have produced from collecting waste from sawmills, for a number of years. We are proud to be one of the UK Government’s approved Biomass Supplier List, reaffirming our commitment to producing the best products for our customers. 4 Advantages of Biomass Fuel Here are four main advantages of using biomass energy – 1. Renewable Energy Source – The main benefit of using biomass fuel is that it is a renewable source of energy. This means it cannot be depleted like fossil fuels. Biomass is mostly derived from plants, with plants needed to support life on planets. 2.Reduce Greenhouse Gas Emissions – Biomass helps to reduce greenhouse gas emissions which in turn has an impact on global warming and climate change. 3. Cleaner Environment – Biomass can also help clean our environment and with the world population only increasing, there is a problem with increased waste which needs to be correctly disposed of. A lot of garbage ends up in rivers, water streams, oceans which harms nearby ecosystems which has a negative impact on human health. 4. Biomass is Widely Available Energy Source – One of the main benefits of biomass energy is that it is a widely available source of energy. We all know fossil fuels are not going to last forever, whereas using biomass is more economic and environmental energy source. Biomass boilers are designed to burn solid fuels classed as biomass to create heat using materials such as wood chip and wood pellets. P.H Winterton and Son have been supplying biomass fuel wood pellets for a number of years to customers all over the country, helping to fuel more renewable heat sources. For our latest blog, we are going to do a deep dive into biomass boilers, how they work and why you should consider investing in one. Do Biomass Fuel Boilers Produce Smoke or Other Emissions? A well-designed biomass boiler using biomass fuel that is specified by its manufacturer, should not produce any smoke. Black smoke can sometimes be produced if the fuel is too wet for the boiler. All biomass boilers produce oxides of nitrogen, especially nitrogen dioxide. Temperatures required to ensure the complete combustion of wood gases will create conditions where atmospheric oxygen and nitrogen can combine chemically. The majority of biomass boilers have a combustion control system that is capable of low NOx emissions, which means they produce less NOx than oil boilers. They also do not produce any oxides of sulphur. How Reliable are Biomass Boilers? The reliability of a biomass system is closely linked to the quality of fuel being burned. Wood pellet systems are more reliable and less prone to breakdown when compared to woodchip systems. How Do I Get Rid of Ash from my Biomass Boiler? Ash created from timber biomass boilers contains the minerals taken up by the trees during growth (such as potassium and phosphorus), which unless it’s been contaminated can form a valuable fertiliser. This ash can be spread in the garden and helps to reduce the acidity in the soil. If you are not much of a gardener, it can be easily disposed of in your household waste. Get in Touch for More Information We are proud to be one of the approved suppliers of biomass fuel in the UK government’s Biomass Supplier List. The use of biomass fuel has increased during the first quarter of 2020, according to data released from the UK Department of Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy. P.H Winterton is the country’s leading provider of biomass fuel pellets, we are also part of the government’s approved Biomass Energy Supplier List. Here we are going to look at the increase in the use of renewable energy and explain a bit more about our grades of biomass wood pellets. Renewable Energy Usage Increasing Renewable energy accounted for 47% of electricity generation during the first quarter of 2020, which is an increase of 11.1% when compared to the same period during 2019. Total renewable electricity capacity in the UK was measured at 47.7 gigawatts throughout the first quarter, which also increased by 5.2% compared to 2019. Different Grades of Pellets Explained P.H Winterton currently offers two different grades of biomass pellets. P16 grade pellets have a moisture content that is under 25% whilst our P35 grade pellets are highly absorbent and can be used in a number of applications. We are able to supply the wood chip produced in large quantities all year round, with the following benefits – A naturally dry form of fuel Recycled product as it is carbon neutral The use of wood that would normally be wasted or sent to landfill A cost-effective heating solution All of our biomass fuel is processed using our custom designed and built plant that chips and screens the wood to two different sizes while extracting all fines less than 6mm from the fuel. The UK Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy has revealed statistics that show renewable resources, such as biomass fuel accounting for 12.3% of the nation’s total energy consumption during 2019. P.H Winterton and Son are the leading suppliers of biomass fuel across the UK, and for our latest blog, we are going to focus on the importance of bio-energy. The Increased Importance of Bio Energy Electricity generated from renewable sources across the UK, reached a record 37.1% last year, which increased 4% on the previous year/ This increase reflected a 6.5% rise in renewable generation capacity to 47.2 gigawatts. Despite reduced nuclear output, the BEIS has stated that low-carbon electricity’s share of generation increase from 52.6% to 54.4%, which was driven by the increase in renewables generation. The BEIS also noted that the bioenergy and waste share of primary energy consumption has tripled over the past 10 years, from 3.2% in 2009 up to 10% in 2019. Biomass Fuel Explained Biomass fuel is an organic material that is produced in a renewable manner creating heat or power. There are currently two popular components from the joinery and farming industry that create biomass fuels, animal and wood wastes. The reason PH Winterton and Son started producing biomass fuel is that joineries were struggling to dispose of surplus wood, meaning we were able to sell this as a renewable energy product. We use Grade A wood residue from sawmill waste collection that can be burned in a boiler for industrial heating plus electricity. Get in Touch for More Information If you would like to know more about P.H Winterton’s biomass fuels, please contact us today. We currently offer two different types of fuel; P16 grade, a smaller size of wood chip plus P35 Grade, which is a Grade Wood that has no contaminations...

Companies using biomass fuel have been handed a boosted with the news that the UK government has given users a 14-month extension to get their low-carbon heat generators up and running. This is part of the Renewable Heat Incentive scheme that offered businesses a set tariff for 20 years on large-scale renewable heat sources such as biomass boilers and heat pumps. P.H Winterton and Son are one of the country’s leading providers of biomass fuel plus we are part of the government’s recognised Biomass Supplier List. For our latest blog, we are going to look at this positive news in greater detail. Renewable Energy Statement Explained The statement from the government said the extension brings ‘vital clarity’ to firms who were in danger of missing the start dates for their projects, project investment in the renewable heat industry plus bringing certainty to people in specialised UK supply chains. In the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic, the government is looking to support projects who were in danger of missing out on the initial deadline of January 2021; making them eligible for another allocation of tariff guarantees. The 12-month extension to the domestic Renewable Heat Incentive runs until 31st March 2022 and prevents 1.2 million tonnes of carbon dioxide from polluting the atmosphere over the lifetime of smaller-scale projects. This will be achieved by converting 18,000 households onto low-carbon heating.
